Style and comfort don’t come much more classic than that found in the Mercedes-Benz W126 500SE. The 500SE was a variant of the W126 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan. Introduced for the 1980 model year, the 500 SE was built on the standard-length wheelbase. The ‘E’ designation in the name refers to the 500SE’s fuel-injection (Einspritzmotor fuel-injected engine in German).
Power initially came from the firms M117.963 5.0L V8 160kW engine, but from the 1986 model year, the updated and more powerful M117.965 5.0L V8 180kW unit found a home. Production of the W126 500SE ran through to 1991, when it was replaced by the next generation W140 S-Class.
Despite its bulky 1620kg curb weight the 250hp V8 performed impressively with a zero to 100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 230km/h. Independent MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear suspension design made for one of the plushest rides around and the highly spec’d cabin transferred very little in the way of road and engine noise. All this added up to see the W126 leading the way as not only a leading round town business car but also an autobahn or cross-Karoo king.
This 1991 500SE is a time-warp car in immaculate original condition, having been garaged all its life and covered just 34 000km since new – the original purchase invoice, full-service history, documentation, condition and like-new driving feel confirm this.
Timelessly elegant, a real performer and safe, the W126 500SE is considered by many marque experts to be the best S-Class ever made and this one is one of the best.
